Outreach Activities

We hope to broaden the impact of our research by sharing our work with those who are members of the local communities in our study area, particularly middle and high school students. We are actively collaborating with Alaska Summer Research Academy and ScienceLIVE to engage K-12 students from Alaska in topics related to Alaskan forests, climate change, and wildfires in ways that will generate excitement and fuel students’ interest in science.

Alaska Summer Research Academy (ASRA)

ASRA is based at the University of Alaska- Fairbanks and provides intensive two-week learning experiences for students themed around a selection of STEM topics. Our team collaborated with ASRA in July of 2019 to create a module for middle-school students about boreal forests, fire and climate change for the 2019 session titled The Burning Forests of Alaska.

ScienceLIVE

ScienceLIVE creates video-based lesson plans to connect students to current field research. ScienceLIVE will develop a four-lesson educational module featuring real data connecting middle and high school students to the research project and team.

Grab your popcorn and watch these four videos, only four min each:

Video on the boreal forest

Video on fire adaptions

Video on permafrost

Video on soil respiration

All the curriculum for this four modules is available here for free.
